Photo of HEB new construction - minimum viable product

If you have driven past a brand new H-E-B (a major, privately owned supermarket chain) on opening week, you have probably seen a scene like the one in these photos.

The parking lot is active. Cars are pulling in. Shoppers are rolling carts through automatic doors. Inside, the store is fully stocked, lit, humming, and ready for real customers.

Outside, the landscaping tells a different story. Dirt is still being moved. Fresh concrete is drying. New sod has the patchy look of a first haircut. Trees are held in place by posts and straps that have not yet blended into the scenery.

It is a half-finished picture. Yet the store is open, fully functioning, and already serving thousands of people.

This is not an accident; it is a strategy. H-E-B opens once the core experience is ready. The rest can be added while the store is alive and working.

This is the idea behind a minimum viable product (MVP).

What a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) Actually Is

The term “minimum viable product” gets tossed around a lot, but the concept is simple: An MVP is the first version of a product that delivers real value.

It is not the most beautiful version or the most complete version. It is the version that lets you:

  • Test your idea in the real world
  • Learn quickly
  • Adjust with purpose
  • Build something strong over time instead of trying to perfect it behind closed doors

Imagine trying to grow a garden but refusing to plant anything until the soil looks perfect. You end up waiting forever. Meanwhile, the sun keeps rising, the seasons keep shifting, and the perfect moment never arrives.

An MVP is planting the first seeds.

You get things into motion, observe what grows, and adjust as you go.

In technology and business, the same principle holds. When you release an MVP, you invite people into the process. You learn their needs from their actions, not just from guesses. You grow side by side with your community, which is far more powerful than building in isolation.

What This Has to Do With Stylists Pay Stylists

Stylists Pay Stylists was built on this same principle.

When we set out to create a platform for beauty professionals to sell education, coaching, and digital products directly to other beauty pros, we faced a decision:

  • Spend a long stretch of time building a custom-coded platform from scratch,
    or
  • Build something functional and strong, using existing tools, then evolve it through real-world use
We chose the second path.

That is why our current storefront sits on WordPress using  WooCommerce plug-ins and why our hosting runs through Bluehost. These tools allowed us to:

  • Build quickly
  • Stay focused on our mission
  • Provide a working storefront instead of waiting for the perfect custom build

Do you remember when Etsy first launched? Compared to now, it was a poop show! You couldn’t search for the item you wanted. So if that page refreshed, or you were inactive for too long and got bounced back to the home page, you’d have to search every page to find the product that you wanted. And here’s the thing, PEOPLE DID THAT! Yep, you heard that right. The person that wanted that charm bracelet went back in to search all those pages to get it.

This is the equivalent of H-E-B opening up their doors while the landscaping team is still settling in. The structure is solid. The experience works. The mission is in motion. The surroundings will continue to grow and mature as we learn from our community.

This choice reflects who we are and  values we hold. It reflects the belief that a real solution in the hands of real people is far more powerful than a perfect idea locked away in planning stages. And the true artist in us, had to learn to let go of perfection, and find beauty in the build.

Proof of Concept Is More Valuable Than Perfection

One of the biggest myths in new business is the belief that everything must be perfect before anyone sees it. And if they do see it, what will they think of us if it’s not pretty, perfect and functioning to the highest level (insert audible gasp)??!

The truth is the opposite.

Nothing becomes great without interaction, stress-testing, and feedback. The perfectionist in us wanted to be picky, and mainly for you!  We wanted our Beauty Pro’s to have all the AI assistance that they could dream of, marketing features that accelerate their sales and unlimited storage to their heart’s desire.

However, the more we learned, the more we leaned on getting the idea out to start working rather than it live in our heads and the hands of developers – our industry needs this now! Now, with our showing proof of concept, people try it, you learn what supports them, and where the next step becomes visible.

Stylists Pay Stylists sets out to solve a real problem in the beauty industry:

  • Beauty professionals are constantly creating education
  • They coach, mentor, teach, market and share business systems.
  • But the tools available for selling that education were not made for the beauty industry.

And although we applaud the platforms being used and artists that have made their expertise available on these other platforms, the affordability just isn’t there for the novice pro, the experienced pro seeking to further their education or speciality, and/or the beauty business owner struggling to keep their doors open. We wanted to create a space where beauty professionals could build their own digital storefronts and sell directly to their peers, without the markups in hosting fees or content itself.

The MVP proves this works. It allows the Beauty Pro to:

  • List their offers
  • Process payments
  • Reach the people who want to learn from them

It gives us the data and insight we need to grow. It confirms that the need is real and that the community is ready to support it. 100% of beauty professionals we spoke with before building stylsitspaystylists.com all said the same thing, “The beauty industry’s needed this for so long.”

HEB does not wait until the mulch is perfect. They open the store so people can start benefiting from it. The finishing touches come later. That is exactly what we are doing.

Community Is the Heart of This

One of our core values is community—not the surface-level buzzword version, but the true version:

  • The kind where people help shape the thing they are building
  • The kind where feedback is not viewed as criticism but as a map
  • The kind where a platform grows because of the people inside it, not just because of the people behind it

Stylists Pay Stylists is starting as a community-centered platform. Every stylist who joins us now is part of shaping what comes next. And here’s the best part. The data shows that the earliest MVP users benefit the most from compounding platform growth. If you:

  • Start uploading resources
  • Add to and/or update them
  • Market alongside SPS

…then each year the platform will do more heavy lifting for you:

  • More buyers → higher baseline traffic without buying ads.
  • Algorithm + reviews → your early reviews compound as social proof.
  • Platform features (promoted listings, becoming a premium seller) added after you already had a strong catalog and brand.

This is where early storefront owners effectively get “equity-like” upside without owning actual equity: their catalog + reputation become native to the platform’s “default search results” as it grows. This is why we are so passionate about building this with every beauty professional in mind. Every single professional in this industry deserves their chance at earning a livable and desirable wage.

We are not building a product for you; we are building it with you. You get to watch the “landscaping” happen in real time. You get to see:

  • Feature updates
  • Refinements
  • Improvements

You also get to say what matters to you and what should come next. This is how strong platforms are built. They grow through:

  • Real use
  • Real communication
  • Real collaboration

Where We Are Going Next

Even though we started with an MVP, the vision ahead of us is much larger. The long term plan is a custom platform built specifically for beauty professionals:

  • A now home for digital products will one day be streamed for easier access/less storage on your end, for your purchases.
  • An event space to host your followers for live classrooms and forums.
  • A marketplace for Beauty Pro’s to sell their gently used tools, products, furniture and clothing.
  • AI tools for universal learning.
  • Marketing tools & analytics to reach your followers/purchasers to drive further sales and communication.
  • In person conferences to bring the best of our pro’s to you live.
  • Our list goes on, but we want to know! What would you add to this list? Comment below to give us your feedback.

Whether this be digital, or a place where you can buy and sell your used tools and/or beauty space furniture, you’re going to be thinking of “SPS” at the heart of it all.

Think of what HEB looks like a year after opening:

  • The landscaping is rooted.
  • The concrete is cured.
  • The trees have filled in.
  • The rough edges disappear, and you are left with a space that feels whole.

That is what Stylists Pay Stylists is becoming. We already know the core concept works. The next phase is building out the custom elements that turn it into a full ecosystem.

This will include:

  • More intuitive dashboards
  • Streamlined product creation tools
  • Better analytics
  • Enhanced communication features
  • Educational infrastructure that supports every type of Beauty Professional

These upgrades become possible because we started early instead of waiting for perfection.

The Beauty of Building in Real Time

There is something honest in seeing a store open before everything outside is polished.

It shows what actually matters. It shows momentum. It shows courage. It shows confidence in the foundation.

Stylists Pay Stylists is in that same stage.

  • The foundation is strong.
  • The lights are on.
  • The system works.
  • The landscaping is ongoing.

And we are building something meaningful while we grow.

We invite you to be part of this phase—not as a spectator, but as one of the people shaping the future of our industry. The more voices, the more feedback, the more involvement, the stronger this platform becomes.

The HEB in your photos will look complete soon. People will forget that it once had dirt piles and unplanted corners. Only the early visitors remember what it looked like in the beginning.

Stylists Pay Stylists is in its beginning, and you are here at the perfect moment to help guide what it becomes.
